Believe it or not, not too long ago, monetary transactions were mostly local, cash-based, and involved banks. Then, EDI and telephone networks made electronic transactions possible. Next, the World Wide Web arrived, bringing with it online transactions. And now, with apps like Venmo, CashApp, and more, transactions can be international and banks no longer need to be involved.
Today, for many people, all currency is digital, and money is simply numbers in accounts (and not necessarily in banks). In Sweden and other countries, cash is almost extinct and people implant microchips in their hands to pay for things. We’re also seeing the re-emergence of the barter and gift economies, both of which don’t use money at all. And then there are cryptocurrencies.
What is the future of money?
In this virtual gathering, look forward to a lively discussion on how current and future technology does and will affect personal finance, community economics, and global trade. Please join us as we share and explore ideas, tap into our collective hearts and minds, and have fun as we brainstorm a future in which Black people continue to thrive against all odds.
